About NSCSSAbout this WikiWebsiteForumBlogChatDiscussion GroupNewsProjects

The United States Consortium of Soil Science Associations (USCSSA) was established in 2001 to promote national communication and coordination between soils societies / associations. NSCSS is a charter member of USCSSA and has a seat on the USCSSA governing Council.

The goal of USCSSA is to promote communications and visibility of state professional soil scientists societies / associations and similar societies / associations in the United States on common soil survey issues including soil interpretations, acquisitions, applications of soil survey data, and outreach to general public and elected decision makers in wise use of science-based soil survey information for protection and management of the nation's soil resources.

USCSSA's goals and objectives are consistent with NSCSS' mission and goals, and important enough to NSCSS to warrant continued action and participation.

Consultant Listing

A USCSSA objective important to NSCSS is the maintenance of a contact list of potential soil scientists available for contracting or working with the general public, local government, state government and federal agencies on individual, or long term project type Soil consulting services. Maintain a web-site contact for those interested soil scientists to have their address and professional references listed that would be available to private industry, state and local units of government and federal agencies as a potential source of contact for soil survey services.

NSCSS has initiated an open project to evaluate and improve this function of the USCSSA website.

National Cooperative Soil Survey

Though not an explicit goal, the context of USCSSA's structure, bylaws and meeting minutes make it clear that the supporting and promoting a vibrant the National Cooperative Soil Survey is absolutely essential to the USCSSA. This affects NSCSS in two ways.

First, is our self-directed dependence on National Cooperative Soil Survey Standards. Our registered professionals are required to adhere to NCSS standards. Communication of NCSS standards and updates is the first on the list of NSCSS' goals.

Second, NSCSS sees the future of the soil science profession (and the fortunes of soil science professionals) as inextricably intertwined with the soil survey program. 1999 NSCSS President Barry Dutton stated in his address to the 2004 National Meeting of the NCSS that:

The decline of the soil survey program is leading the decline of the soil survey profession.

The corollary is that, NSCSS supports a vigorous soil survey program. USCSSA is important to that effort.
